DORIS BENNETT, 80, daughter of Vincent and Doris Werdann, passed peacefully at home on Saturday, September 29, 2018. She was born in Queens, New York, and moved with her husband, Jack Bennett and their two children to Jackson Twp., NJ, in 1963.
Doris was employed as a teacher with the Jackson Twp. School District. She began teaching in Switlik Elementary School in 1969 and retired in 2000. Doris was honored to be “Teacher of the Year” for the Jackson Twp. School District in 1992. She taught CCD at St. Aloysius for almost 40 years.
Doris was a founding member of St. Aloysius Parish in Jackson Twp., with the first parish meeting being held in her home. Always an active member of the parish, she served as a lector through 2018. In addition, she helped start the Bereavement Ministry and served on the Pastoral Council. She was also a member of the Merton Faith Sharing Group. Doris volunteered with St. Vincent DePaul and Caregiver Volunteers of Central New Jersey.
She moved to the Westlake community in 2002, where she enjoyed retirement while playing golf, tennis and bridge. She enjoyed hosting 4th of July parties and celebrating other countries national days with festive luncheons with all her friends, contributing dishes of the celebrated country.
Doris was predeceased by her parents, Vincent and Doris Werdann; and by her husband, Jack in 2003. She is survived by her children, Jerry Bennett and his wife Katharine of Manahawkin, NJ, and Kathleen Batko and her husband, David of Bradley Beach, NJ; her grandchildren, Austin and Sean Bennett; and by her sister, Wendy Burke of Hudson, MA.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend her visitation from 4-8 PM on Wednesday, October 3, 2018, at the GEORGE S. HASSLER FUNERAL HOME, 980 Bennetts Mills Rd., Jackson Twp., NJ 08527. A funeral gathering will be offered at 9:15 AM on Thursday, October 4, 2018, at the funeral home. Her Funeral Liturgy will follow at 10:30 AM at St. Aloysius Roman Catholic Church, 935 Bennetts Mills Rd., Jackson Twp., NJ. Interment to follow in Brig. Gen. William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 350 Province Line Rd., Arneytown, NJ 08562.
